Member of Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Commission, Reza Talaei-Nik said that the Iraqi government is in position to release the kidnapped Iranian diplomats.

Talaei-Nik made the remark in an exclusive interview with IRNA on Saturday.

In a letter to the United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon Friday, Iran severely criticized the raid on the Iranian consulate in Erbil and called on the UN to respond to the aggression immediately.

US forces broke into the consulate building on Jan 11, disarmed its guards, arrested the consular staff and took them away along with the consulate's computers and documents to an unknown place.

He noted that in addition to legal measures such as Iran's letter to UN as well as political and diplomatic movements, major attempts are required to encourage Iraqi government to play its role to release the Iranian diplomats.

"Iraq's government has the potential to release the kidnapped Iranian diplomats.

"Given the new grounds prepared for such a release, effective and continuous pursuance of Iranian government as well as the active role of Iraqi government in this regard will be fruitful," he added.

Turning to the US strategy to exert multifaceted pressure on Iran, he said that deterrent capacities should be promoted.

"To prepare the ground to further restrict Iran and pressurize it, the US seeks to break the limit of Iran's tolerance not only in security and intelligence fields as well as military, political and economic domains," he added.
