US sinking deeper in Iraq quagmire: MP

A Majlis deputy said here Saturday that US President George W Bush's decision to increase troops in Iraq would sink Washington deeper in the quagmire it has found itself in after its invasion of the country almost four years ago.

Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Chairman Alaeddin Boroujerdi's remarks were made during an exclusive interview with IRNA.

"Bush's new strategy will not help the US get rid of its current crisis," he said.

"Although he has been advised to change course by the Baker- Hamilton report, Bush is still pushing through with other activities in this remaining period of his presidency to try to cover up his failures in Iraq, particularly the killing of thousands of US soldiers," the MP added.

He stressed that Bush was trying to find a scapegoat and was intensifying his political and media propaganda to cover up his failures in Iraq.

Pointing to the raid Wednesday of the Iranian consulate in Erbil, Iraq, and the arrest of six of its staff (one was released Friday), Boroujerdi said the move points to a "deliberate flouting of international law out of desperation over the failure of his (Bush's) policies in Iraq."

The MP from Boroujerd city predicted all suicidal attempts of Bush will not rectify his failed policies in Iraq.
