Brother-In-Law, Nephew of Saddam Trial Judge Gunned Down
29 September 2006
Iraqi authorities say gunmen have shot dead the brother-in-law of the new judge in charge of the genocide trial against former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein.
Kadhim Abdul-Hussein and his son Karrar were in their car in Baghdad when gunmen opened fire Friday. There were conflicting reports on the condition of the son.
It was not immediately clear if the two were attacked because they were related to chief judge Mohammed Oreibi al-Khalifa. The Iraqi government replaced the original chief judge, Abdullah al-Amiri, earlier this month after he said Saddam was not a dictator.
Meanwhile, gunmen killed two policemen in the Doura district of Baghdad.
And Iraqi security forces launched an operation against insurgents in the town of Baquba, 60 kilometers northeast of Baghdad. Officials say they detained 60 suspects.
In another development, the leader of al-Qaida in Iraq called on weapons experts to supply his fighters with biological weapons and dirty bombs.
In an audio recording posted Thursday on the Internet, a man who identified himself as Abu Hamza al-Muhajer also urged militants in Iraq to kidnap Western Christians to swap for a Muslim cleric, Omar Abdel-Rahman, jailed for life in the U.S.
