Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki said that the 9th foreign ministers meeting of Iraqi neighboring states was held in Tehran with an aim of assessing its current developments, declaring multifaceted support for its government-elect, helping promote its security and stability and reaching joint understanding in the region.
He made the remark while speaking at the closing ceremony of the two-day 9th foreign ministers meeting of Iraqi neighboring states on Sunday.
"Iraq's situation in the past years and signs of a disastrous war in the Middle East, whose consequences and traces resulted in the gathering of foreign ministers of its neighboring states to exchange views and come up with a joint strategy to stop the unilateral measures of the foreign troops in the region and facilitate their collective measures towards establishment of regional peace and stability," he added.
The minister said that since the beginning of Iraq's crisis nine foreign ministers meetings of the countries neighboring Iraq were held in these states on a rotating basis by the governments of the region as well as regional and international institutions.
"The foreign ministers attending the meeting stressed that the nternational community, in particular regional and international bodies and the countries neighboring Iraq should play a more active role in its political and economic activities," he said.
Mottaki expressed his concern over the constant presence of some recognized terrorist groups in Iraq and their threats against it and the neighboring states and urged the need to confront these groups.
"Meanwhile, during the event, the need was expressed for a fair and transparent trial of Saddam Hussein and other criminals of Iraq's Baathist regime as well as multifaceted support for the Palestinian nation and government," he added.
