05 June 2006
Iraqi officials say gunmen in police uniforms have abducted 50 employees of various Baghdad transportation companies.
Officials say the gunmen carried out what appeared to be a coordinated operation Monday along a Baghdad street where several companies offering transport to Syria and Jordan operate.
No other details were immediately available.
In another development, the trial of deposed Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein and seven co-defendants accused of crimes against humanity resumed Monday in Baghdad.
The presiding Judge - Raouf Abdel Rahman - began the session with testimony from two witnesses for defendant Ali Dayih Ali, a minor Baathist official from Dujail.
The latest developments come as political leaders grapple over choices to run the country's army and police.
Iraq's political leaders Sunday postponed indefinitely a parliament session intended to consider choices for two key security posts. Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki had been expected to announce the names of candidates for the defense and interior ministers.
