Security Council, Annan condemn attack on Russian Embassy employees in Baghdad

3 June 2006 The United Nations Security Council and Secretary-General Kofi Annan condemned the killing today in Baghdad of one employee of the Russian Embassy and the kidnapping of four others.

Members of the Security Council issued a press statement condemning the fatal attack in the “strongest possible terms” and demanding that the hostages be “treated humanely and released immediately.”

The Council members also reaffirmed “their support for the Iraqi people, their condemnation of terrorist attacks in Iraq, and? their determination to combat all forms of terrorism.”

Mr. Annan, in a statement released by his spokesman, also condemned the attack and called for the “immediate and unconditional release” of all those kidnapped.

“The Secretary-General deplores this attack and calls for the cessation of all such acts of violence,” the spokesman said. “He also calls on the Iraqi government and the Multinational Force (MNF) to take all necessary measures to counter the present wave of violence.”
