Iraqi Forces Search for Kidnapped UAE Diplomat; Saddam Appears in Court

17 May 2006

Iraqi security forces are searching for a United Arab Emirates diplomat who was kidnapped Tuesday in the Mansour district of western Baghdad.

Police say the diplomat's bodyguard - a Sudanese national who was wounded in the assault - later died of his injuries at a Baghdad hospital.

In other developments, Saddam Hussein returned to court Wednesday, to hear testimony from defense witnesses for some of his co-defendants. The trial was later adjourned until Monday.

The ousted Iraqi leader and seven others are accused of crimes against humanity for the 1982 killings of 148 Shi'ites from the village of Dujail.

Meanwhile, Iraqi politicians say Prime Minister-designate Nouri al-Maliki may soon announce the composition of a new unity government. A Western diplomat says Mr. al-Maliki will present his Cabinet by next week's constitutionally mandated deadline.

The United States has said a unified Iraqi government is key to ending sectarian violence and insurgent attacks.
