Date of Iran-US talks on Iraq to be officially announced: Entezami

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Tehran, April 8, IRNA
Iran-US-Talks
The exact date of talks between Iran and the United States on Iraq will be officially announced, a senior official said here Saturday.

Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) spokesman Hossein Entezami told IRNA the sides have not agreed on the date of the talks.

"But the talks will certainly been held in Baghdad," he added.

He said the domestic and foreign media had published news reports mentioning a date for the Tehran-Washington talks but that these news were pure speculation and not from an official source.

"Tehran agreed to hold talks with Washington on Iraq upon a request of the head of the Supreme Council for the Islamic Revolution in Iraq (SCIRI), Abdul Aziz al-Hakim.

"The Islamic Republic of Iran agrees to hold talks with the US in principle," the SNSC spokesman said.

He said the US ambassador to Baghdad and other US State Department officials had called for the holding talks with Iran since autumn (last year) yet, but that Tehran showed no reaction." He hoped the upcoming negotiations would help establish a strong Iraqi government, speed up withdrawal of occupiers from that country and increase security in the two neighboring states' borders.
