US Military Dog Handler Found Guilty of Detainee Abuse in Iraq
21 March 2006
After three days of deliberation, a jury at Fort Meade, Maryland, Tuesday found Sergeant Michael Smith guilty of six of the 13 charges brought against him.
The Army said Smith used his dog to intimidate Iraqi prisoners for fun and competed with another canine handler to try to make detainees soil themselves.
Smith's lawyer, Captain Mary McCarthy, said there had been a lack of clear guidance for him to follow.
His sentence is expected to be announced later today.
Nine other U.S. soldiers have been convicted of abusing Iraqi detainees at Abu Ghraib. The longest sentence so far has been 10 years in prison.
