Iraqi Prime Minister Condemns New Abuse Images

16 February 2006 -- The Iraqi government today condemned the latest images of detainees being abused U.S. soldiers in Abu Ghurayb Prison, but said those responsible had already been punished.

A statement issued by Prime Minister Ibrahim al-Ja'fari's office said the Iraqi government "takes responsibility to prevent such acts."

The statement also said the Iraqi government welcomed the U.S. denunciation of the pictures, which were first aired on 16 February by an Australia's SBS television station, but date back to 2003.

An unidentified official was quoted in the statement as saying the latest images were among others that had led to the prosecution of several people involved.

Dorothea Krimitsas, a spokeswoman for the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), today said the ICRC was "shocked and dismayed at the treatment and the abuse" depicted in the images.
