In Jordan, UN envoy says recent terror attacks underscore need for peace in Iraq

15 November 2005 The recent terror attacks in Jordan underscore the urgency of bringing peace to Iraq, a senior United Nations official said today following high-level meetings in Amman.

In a meeting with Jordanian Prime Minister Adnan Badran, UN Iraq envoy Ashraf Jehangir Qazi expressed sympathy for the tragic loss of life perpetrated by terrorists against innocent civilians in Amman and said the attacks called attention to the broader need for stability.

Mr. Qazi briefed Prime Minister Badran on the latest development in Iraq, including Secretary General Kofi Annan's visit to Baghdad on Saturday.

The two also discussed the upcoming preparatory meeting organized in Cairo under the auspices of the Arab League to explore how to achieve national reconciliation among different political factions in Iraq.

Mr. Qazi expressed the gratitude of the UN Assistance Mission in Iraq (UNAMI) for Jordan's support and assistance. UNAMI's Amman office is central to its operations.
