Saddam Trial Defense Lawyer Found Dead in Baghdad

21 October 2005

Iraqi police say a defense lawyer in the trial of deposed leader Saddam Hussein has been found shot dead, less than a day after he was kidnapped.

Authorities say the body of Saadoun al-Janabi, a lawyer for one of Saddam's seven co-defendants, Awad al-Bander was found in Baghdad early Friday with several gunshot wounds.

Gunmen seized the defense lawyer late Thursday from his Baghdad office.

A government spokesman condemned the killing, telling the Associated Press it does not serve the interests of the trial or of the political process.

Also, election officials are continuing to count ballots from Saturday's constitutional referendum.

The proposed constitution will not win approval if at least two thirds of voters in three provinces vote against it.

In another development, the U.S. military says one U.S. soldier and three Marines died of wounds sustained in two separate attacks on Thursday.
