IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Tehran, Oct 17, IRNA

Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki said here Monday the enthusiastic participation of the Iraqi nation in Friday's referendum showed the unity, convergence and firm determination of the nation and political groups to establish a free and independent state.

Sixty-one percent of eligible voters took part in Iraq's constitutional referendum on Friday. A total of 15.5 million people were eligible to vote in the referendum.

"The Islamic Republic congratulates the Iraqi nation, government and religious and political leaders over this important event which was among the decisive points in Iraqi history much like the elections which took place in the country last year. The event promises a bright future with peace and stability in Iraq," he said.

The minister added, "Iran voices full support for the Iraqi government and nation in their determination to achieve their goals, and calls on all Iraqi political and religious groups to make constructive efforts to fully materialize the processes of holding parliamentary elections and establishing a broad-based and permanent government.

"The continued strong participation of the Iraqi nation in their country's political developments will be a major step towards independence, withdrawal of foreigners and return of the country to its rightful position in the region."
