Al-Basrah Authorities Refuse Contacts With British
22 September 2005 (RFE/RL) -- Local authorities in the southern Iraqi city of Al-Basrah have severed cooperation with British troops following a controversial British raid on a police station there this week.
Local provincial government spokesman Nadim al-Ja'bari said all regular meetings with British troops have been canceled and British soldiers are not allowed into any public office in Al-Basrah.
British forces on 19 September stormed a police station in Al-Basrah in search of two arrested comrades, and later found and freed them. The raid sparked anti- British protests in the city.
On 21 September, Iraqi Prime Minister Ibrahim Ja'fari met British Defense Secretary John Reid in London to discuss the incident. The two told reporters diplomatic ties had not been harmed.
