Foreign Ministers and officials from over 80 countries and international organisations Wednesday pledged to support Iraq's political transition process and its economic recovery and reconstruction.
Meeting in Brussels for the international conference on Iraq, they emphasized the central role of the United Nations in Iraq, said Jean Asselborn, Luxembourg Foreign Minister, whose country currently holds the EU's rotating Presidency, in a press conference Wednesday evening.
"Participants expressed support for Iraq's efforts to achieve a democratic, pluralist, federal and unified Iraq," he said, reading from a final statement released after the one-day event co-hosted by the EU and the US.
"The international community and Iraq have turned a page together," UN Secretary General Kofi Annan told the same press conference.
Expressing similar sentiments, US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, said 'we heard a very positive vision of Iraq's future." The conference statement called for strengthening of good neighborly relations with Iraq and for improvement of regional security.
Rice said Syria has a responsibility not to allow its territory to be used by the insurgents in Iraq.
Iraqi foreign minister Hoshyar Zebari described the conference as a "successful day for Iraq. A good day for Iraq."
