IRAQI PRESS QOUTES & EDITORIALS, 4 June 05
“Cooperation between government institutions”- Al-Bayan
Al-Bayan [From editorial]:
"In order to guarantee proper implementation of its programme, the new government must ensure full cooperation between its institutions and the Iraqi public. It should also do its best to involve patriotic political forces, for this is the only way to enhance the political process, the ultimate success of which would be beneficial not to any particular party or group of parties, but to the Iraqi public at large."
“Latest snapshot of the bloody Iraqi scene”- Al-Mashriq
Al-Mashriq [From editorial]:
"Dogs booby-trapped, melons poisoned and bomb-rigged bikes detonated - these are the components of the latest snapshot of the bloody Iraqi scene, the most shocking single picture of the ongoing Iraqi tragicomedy. Indeed, one would not know whether to shake with laughter or to shed bitter tears at all this. As for you, my Iraqi countrymen, I would suggest you make the best of both worlds, for you cannot but weep hilariously, as it were, seeing the tragedy you have been drawn into for the uproarious farce it must be in other people's eyes."
Iraqi press comment (4 June)
Al-Adalah runs an article by Dr Ali Khulayf commemorating the late Ayatollah Muhammad Baqir al-Hakim, former leader of the Supreme Council for the Islamic Revolution in Iraq (SCIRI), commending his steadfastness in "fighting tyranny" and supporting the democratic process in Iraq .
Al-Sabah al-Jadid runs an editorial by Chief Editor Isma'il Zayir commenting on the rejection of the EU constitution by French and Dutch voters. The author says that the public in these countries does not "trust" the right wing leaders.
Dar al-Salam publishes an editorial commenting on the recent arrest of Iraqi Islamic Party leader Muhsin Abd-al-Hamid by the "occupation forces." The editorial says that this arrest proved that the "occupation" and its Iraqi agents do not want to "calm down the chaotic situation and establish stability," but are working towards "creating a crisis in order to fragment Iraq instead."
Al-Mashriq publishes a report commenting on the reports that poisoned melon was distributed at an army checkpoint. The writer says that this report is an example of the Iraqi "panorama," a comedy and a tragedy at the same time.
Al-Mada publishes an article commenting on the suicide car bomb hat exploded near a restaurant in the populated Al-Talbiyyah area.

Al-Sharqiyah TV launches new website, offers live video stream
On the websites of Iraq 's first privately-owned and independent TV station, Al-Sharqiyah (the Eastern One), at http://www.alsharqiyatv.com and http://www.alsharqiya.com, revealed numerous new features. Previous checks on these websites had noted no significant content: they featured merely the station logo in Arabic and English, with "under construction" half-way down the page. Both websites - which currently appear to be mirrors of each other - are now well populated with items, pictures and links, one of which offers access to a live video stream of the station. This was noted to be in parallel with the satellite TV signal of the station broadcasting from the 13 degrees east Hotbird satellite. The video quality of the live stream was quite poor, with low resolution, but streaming was smooth, with no noticeable dropouts. The website is attractively laid-out, and is in Arabic. A link to the UK Weather Channel is provided at the bottom of the home page.
Al-Sharqiyah's owner and chairman is the Dubai-based Iraqi media tycoon Saad Bazzaz, who also owns the London-based Arabic-language daily Azzaman.
