Six soldiers killed in attack on convoy north of Baghdad
An attack on an Iraqi military convoy in Bayj, Salah-al-Din Governorate, north of Baghdad , has led to the death of six soldiers and the wounding of six others. Iraqi Al-Sharqiyah TV quoted eyewitnesses as saying gunmen attacked a military convoy which was en route to Mosul in the centre of the city, destroying two vehicles. The army fired mortars at the attack site, killing one Iraqi and wounding five others. (Al-Sharqiyah, Baghdad , in Arabic 21 May 05)

The sources said that troops killed a civilian who was driving his car at a high speed towards an Education Department, thinking he had explosives in the car. Iranian demand for war reparations "shocks" government - TV
Iraqi Al-Sharqiyah TV said on 21 May that an Iranian Foreign Ministry statement the previous day that Tehran would continue to pursue the issue of reparations for the 1980-1988 Iraq-Iran war had come as a "big shock" to the Iraqi government. Foreign Ministry spokesman Hamid-Reza Asefi said the reparations issue would remain on the Iranian government agenda. The TV said the timing of the statement had caused the Iraqi government "great embarrassment" because it came a day after Iranian Foreign Minister Kamal Kharrazi concluded a visit to Iraq that Baghdad had hoped would "contribute to closing" the "war file". "Asefi pretended to have forgotten the huge human and material losses Iraq sustained and the big losses the huge sum of money Iran is asking for would cause to the Iraqi economy," the TV commented. (Al-Sharqiyah, Baghdad , in Arabic 21 May 05)

Interior Minister Bayan Jabr told a news conference on 21st that since the beginning of May, 250 gunmen had been arrested and 200 others had been killed in confrontations across the country, Al-Sharqiyah TV reported. Jabr said he was "willing to deal with the devil in order to defeat terrorism in his country". He said his ministry had devised a new plan to deal with the security deterioration two days ago. He added that the security situation deteriorated since 15 March due to laxity of the government, a security vacuum, and an absence of clear decision-making. IRAQI PRESS QOUTES, 21 May 05
Al-Sharq al-Awsat [From commentary by Adnan Hussain]:
"What is urgently needed is an Iraqi national convention excluding none but those directly involved in criminal and terrorist acts, for the situation has become far too grave for the United Iraqi Alliance and the Kurdish Coalition to face up to on their own."
Al-Dustur [From editorial]:
"We may be in favour of people expressing dissent through peaceful means, but we are as much opposed to having places of worship closed as a pressure tactic manipulated for political gain as we are to having them unjustifiably raided and their custodians willfully detained, whether by regular security forces or irregular militias."
Al-Sabah al-Jadid [From editorial]:
"Much of the ominous combination of divisiveness, suspicion and vengefulness now poisoning the political atmosphere can be traced down to the insidious practices of residual Saddam loyalists who have found their way back into the new government system and are utilizing their official posts in a choreographed effort to promote the terrorists' agenda."
