Army 15-6 investigation results announced
BAGHDAD, Iraq –The military investigating officer completed his AR15-6 investigation report, which was approved April 29, regarding the March 4 incident at a traffic control point in Baghdad resulting in the death of one Italian and the wounding of two others.
Brig. Gen. Peter Vangjel, Multinational Corps-Iraq investigating officer, was appointed March 8 by Lt. Gen. John R. Vines, MNC-I commander, to investigate all the circumstances surrounding the death of Nicola Calipari, an Italian intelligence officer, and the wounding of Guiliana Sgrena, an Italian journalist, and their driver.
“This was a tragic accident and MNF-I expresses its deepest sympathies to the Calipari family,” said Vangjel.
The AR15-6 investigation concluded that the vehicle approaching the
checkpoint failed to reduce speed until fired upon and that the soldiers manning the checkpoint acted in accordance with the rules of engagement.
Brig. Gen. Vangjel’s recommendation that no disciplinary action be taken against any soldier was approved by Lt. Gen. Vines.
“The Italian military is making significant contributions everyday to help secure the future of Iraq,” said General George W. Casey, Commanding General of Multi-National Force-Iraq, “and we are proud to be serving beside them.”
