MUFTI RAVIL GAINUTDIN BELIEVES THAT "IT WILL BE VERY DIFFICULT" TO CONSIDER ELECTIONS IN IRAQ TO BE DEMOCRATIC

RIA Novosti

MOSCOW, February 1 (RIA Novosti) - Chairman of the Muftis' Council of Russia (SMR) mufti Sheikh Ravil Gainutdin stated that "it will be very difficult" to view the elections in Iraq as democratic. He said this at the meeting with journalists in Moscow on Monday.

"It will be very difficult to consider the election to be democratic in conditions of war, aggression and occupation," he noted.

The mufti went on to say that it was also "very difficult" to hold the election in the situation now obtaining on the territory of Iraq. "More than 90% of the Sunnis could not participate in the election. This means that a huge part of the Iraqi population did not participate in the election and did not elect the parliament for the country," mufti Gainutdin stressed.

According to him, "the fact that a referendum was announced on the territory inhabited by the Kurds can also complicate the election." "The election can become a breakup of the single Arab state, and, as I think, this does not serve the interests of the whole Iraqi population," the mufti warned.

At the same time he noted that the Sunnis and Shi'ites of Iraq had not yielded to the provocations when it was intended to set them against each other. "They set up the Council of Islamic Ulemas (scholars) in Iraq. This showed to the whole world that the Sunnis and Shi'ites know how to reach agreement," mufti Gainutdin said.

"I am confident that the ulemas will do everything in their power to see Islam integral on the territory of Iraq," the SMR chairman concluded.
