Leaders Discuss Upcoming Elections

Forward Operating Base Dagger, Tikrit, Iraq
- Leadership from around the Salah Ad Din Province met here Jan. 25 with Maj. Gen. John R.S. Batiste, 1st Infantry Division commander, Brig. Gen. John W. Morgan, 1st ID assistant division commander for Maneuver, and Col. Randal Dragon, 2nd Brigade Combat Team commander, to discuss the upcoming Jan. 30 elections.

During the rehearsal, the attendees discussed a variety of topics including ballot delivery, ballot recovery and city security briefs. One of the major issues was the lowered number of polling sites in each city.

According to Dragon, the purpose of the rehearsal was to move from the planning phase of the elections to the execution phase.

"We've worked for many months on a very detailed plan to support these elections. The leadership must provide a safe and secure environment so every citizen is able to cast a vote," Dragon said.

Dragon also stressed the need for the citizens to get out and vote despite the possible threats posed to the voters.

"We could have the best polling places in the world, but if nobody comes to vote, it does your country no good," Dragon said.

Following the rehearsal, the Salah Ad Din leadership held a press conference to answer any additional questions. (Story by Spc. Joe Alger, 1st Infantry Division Public Affairs Office)
