Guilty Verdict Reached as Alban court Martial Concludes
Camp Liberty, Baghdad, Iraq -- Staff Sgt. Jonathan J. Alban-Cardenas was convicted on one count of murder and one count of conspiracy to commit murder during a general court martial at the 1st Cavalry Division courthouse here, Jan. 14.
Prior to the sentencing phase, seven witnesses for the defense gave supporting statements, documentary statements were received and Alban also took the stand. Then closing statements were made by both the defense and prosecution.
Alban had chosen a trial by military judge alone rather than by court members. The judge spent one hour deliberating and returned with the verdict, sentencing Alban to one year confinement, reduction to the lowest pay grade (Private/E-1) and a bad conduct discharge.
