IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency
Tehran, Dec 27, IRNA -- Foreign Ministry spokesman Hamid Reza Asefi on Monday condemned an assassination attempt on the life of Head of the Supreme Assembly of the Islamic Revolution in Iraq (SAIRI) Abdel Aziz Hakim. Such criminal acts are performed with the aim of eliminating the Iraqi effective leaders who have shouldered the responsibility of defending the Iraqi nation for over 20 years, Asefi said, adding that such acts are also aimed at creating insecurity in the Iraqi society and to prevent the scheduled elections in that country. Presence of foreign forces in Iraq not only did not lead to establishment of security and tranquility in that country but also it intensified the crisis, insecurity and terrorist acts in that war-torn country, he reiterated. The Iraqi government is responsible for providing a secure atmosphere for all Iraqi citizens as well as all officials and respectful personalities, Asefi further noted. According to reports, a car bomb explosion near the office of Hakim on Monday killed between four to six people, including Hakim`s security guards and a woman, according to hospital sources and Hakim`s political party. Hakim`s son said his father had escaped with his life after a car bombing at his Baghdad office but that four or five security guards were killed. A spokesman at Hakim`s office in Baghdad said three or four were killed in the bombing and several others wounded, while medical sources said one woman was killed and 24 were wounded. An interior ministry official confirmed the car bomb exploded in the southeastern Jadriyah neighborhood, where Hakim lives in the former home of Saddam Hussein`s deputy prime minister Tareq Aziz. 1422/1432
