Soldier Accepts Plea Bargain in Murder Case

Camp AL-Taheer, Iraq
- A Task Force Baghdad Soldier charged with murdering an Iraqi civilian pled guilty today during a general court martial here.

Staff Sgt. Johnny M. Horne pled guilty to one specification of murder in violation of Article 118 of the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ) as well as one specification of conspiracy to commit murder in violation of Article 81.

The convictions stemmed from Staff Sgt. Horne's murder of a severely wounded Iraqi civilian in Baghdad's Sadr City district on August 18.

The trial now moves to the sentencing phase, where a panel of seven senior service members will hear testimony. The government may present evidence in aggravation, and the defense may present evidence in extenuation and mitigation.

Horne's sentence is expected to be passed later today.
