UN welcomes pledge by Iraq's neighbours to improve security, fight terrorism

1 December 2004 Welcoming the agreement by Iraq's neighbours to take a number of measures to improve its security, including cooperating on border control and fighting terrorism, the top United Nations envoy to the war-torn country today pledged the world body's continued commitment to reconstruction efforts.

"We are at your disposal, at the disposal of the Iraqi Government and the people of Iraq, to help in the noble cause of rebuilding a country," Secretary-General Kofi Annan's Special Representative Ashraf Qazi told a conference of regional interior ministers in Tehran, Iran.

The meeting unanimously adopted a joint communiqué pledging the measures to improve the security environment in Iraq.

In remarks at the closing session of the conference, Mr. Qazi said the steps would enable them to contribute to an environment conducive to the success of the political process.
