Reconstruction Projects in Najaf, Samarra Number in Hundreds
State Department highlights efforts in two Iraqi cities
In response to a press query November 12, the State Department provided the following background on the reconstruction effort in the Iraqi cities of Najaf and Samarra:

Iraq: Najaf/Samarra Reconstruction Effort
QUESTION: What reconstruction projects in Najaf and Samarra have been underway since the cities returned to government control?
Answer: A total of 96 projects in Samarra, worth $13.9 million, are underway or are scheduled to commence by January 31, 2005. The Iraqi Interim Government has also provided $25 million for projects in Samarra. Of the 96 total projects, 51, worth $9.0 million, are currently underway. Work on two water renovation projects has been accelerated.
In Najaf, 226 projects, many of which are in the education sector, worth $53.98 million are underway or are scheduled to commence by January 31, 2005. The Iraqi Interim Government will grant $50 million to Najaf for reconstruction.
In addition to these community-specific projects, Iraqis in Najaf and Samarra will also benefit from nationwide infrastructure rehabilitation projects in such sectors as water and electricity.
