UN envoy discusses poll preparations with Iraqi Vice President3 November 2004 The United Nations envoy for Iraq, Ashraf Qazi, and Iraqi Vice President Rowsch Shaways met today to review progress in preparations for the country's first democratic elections due to be held in January.
The two also discussed the rebuilding process in Iraq, with focus on the UN-led humanitarian work in the country, UN spokesman Fred Eckhard said at a news briefing in New York, adding that Mr. Qazi and Mr. Shaways - a member of the Kurdish Democratic Party - also exchanged their views regarding the situation in Kurdistan.
Meanwhile, voter registration continued in centres set up across the country by the Iraqi Independent Electoral Commission. The Commission is currently engaged in technical preparations for the polls.
Mr. Eckhard said the work related to certification of political entities intending to compete in the elections would be over by the end of this month, but voter registration would continue for another six weeks.
