IRAQI PRESS QUOTES , 10 NOV 04
Al-Dustur [Baghdad, daily independent newspaper in Arabic]: [From editorial by Basim al-Shaykh] "The government and its US ally will storm Al-Fallujah and use all military capabilities at their disposal to crush the armed groups. This is a real translation of the aspired goals of Iraq occupation, in the forefront of which applying US democracy at whatever price What is happening in Al-Fallujah continues to be governed by reason and fanaticism, good and evil, peace and war, decision and indecision, freedom and slavery, democracy and dictatorship, unity and division. Apart from this, it is a battle of slogans in which Iraqis remain the only losers".
Al-Fallujah should have reached half-way solutions- Al-Manarah
Al-Manarah [Basra, daily independent newspaper in Arabic published by the Voice of the South Press, Printing and Publishing Corporation]: [From editorial by Khalaf al-Munshidi]"The margin of manoeuvre was still available to all by using the political means to convey the voice of rejection to the whole world. Accordingly, Al-Fallujah should have reached half-way solutions ... especially with the United States willing to use all the power it has in order not to appear as losing its bet in Iraq with Bush today having plenty of time and a long four-year opportunity before leaving the White House What could be gained through fighting could also be gained through politics There is still enough time to end the suffering of Al-Fallujah and stop the destruction of the city. The government should spare no moment to reach an agreement and save the blood of our brothers there The city should also throw Al-Zarqawi and his aides out of the city, if there are any, because their presence there is not in favour of their cause".
History repeats itself- Al-Zaman
Al-Zaman [daily, independent, Baghdad edition of London-based Al-Zaman]: [From Adil Taqi al-Baldawi] "History repeats itself when Iyad Allawi declares a state of emergency in the country after a government announcement that negotiations have failed to find a peaceful way out of Al-Fallujah crisis The government should have entered into dialogue with the national forces that have made public their intention to boycott the forthcoming elections which are illegitimate under the occupation ... The occupiers, for their part, should realize that if a government has been elected, they should define a deadline for their withdrawal, otherwise matters will get out of control. This means Iraq will remain a restless volcano, even if the state of emergency is extended for ever".
