IRAQI PRESS QUOTES, 06 NOV 04

``Bush combines executive and legislative powers'' - Al-Sharq al-Awsat

Al-Sharq al-Awsat [Baghdad edition of London-based daily Al-Sharq al-Awsat] [From commentary by Abd al-Rahman al-Rashid]: "It should be noted that, in winning his second term, Bush has in fact been crowned a sovereign king. He has won virtually everything, assuming an almost full monopoly of power. With his party having won the majority of seats in both the House and the Senate, he now combines executive and legislative powers - a rare achievement by any US president. Moreover, no longer constrained by the prospect of winning a second term and, consequently, no longer susceptible to partisan or lobbyist pressure, he has far greater freedom of action now than during his first term. Current Arab gloom over Bush's re-election notwithstanding, if the Palestinians really want a state of their own, this is the moment to go for it and this is the man who can deliver."

``Late Shaykh Zayid Bin-Sultan, A good-hearted ruler''- Al-Bayan
Al-Ba'th
, Syrian Daily Newspaper, Damascus, in Arabic [From commentary by Salim Rasul]: "Paying tribute to the late Shaykh Zayid Bin-Sultan, the United Arab Emirates' head of state, media outlets have generally focused on the pan-Arab aspect of the positive stands characteristically taken by the deceased in line with his kind and generous personality. Laudable as they may be, these stands are not so important in Iraqi eyes as the late ruler's political and economic achievements at home. After all, Iraqis cannot help feeling bitter when they compare the peace and prosperity their brethren in the Emirates are enjoying, thanks to the wise policies of their good-hearted late ruler, with the untold misery brought upon the people of Iraq by the reckless policies of a lunatic despot now vegetating behind bars."
``A showdown between two irreconcilable cultures'' - Al-Zaman
Al-Zaman [daily, independent, Baghdad edition of London-based Al-Zaman]: [From commentary by Mustafa al-Qaradaghi]:
"The military and media confrontation now raging on Iraqi soil between the Iraqi government and its national, regional and international supporters, on the one hand, and world terrorism along with its national, regional and global supporters, on the other, amounts to a decisive showdown between two irreconcilable cultures: the one valuing human life, peace, democracy and human rights, and the other promoting death, murder, dictatorship and slavery
