  • EGYPT/IRAQ MEETING VOA 22 Nov 2004 -- Senior Iraqi officials sought support from neighbors Syria, Turkey, Iran, Jordan, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait on Monday, the first day of an international conference in Egypt aimed at helping Iraq stabilize its security and organize elections, scheduled for the end of January.
  • Iraq: Country Prepares For Parliamentary Elections On 30 January RFE/RL 22 Nov 2004 -- Iraq has set 30 January as the date for the election of a transitional parliament that will select a new government and draft a permanent constitution. But among ordinary Iraqis, there are concerns about how continuing violence might affect the vote. There also is confusion over the voting process and who the candidates will be. But while some Iraqis want the election to be delayed, others are eager for the vote to go ahead.
  • IRAQ / DEBT VOA 22 Nov 2004 -- About 20 countries, including Russia, have agreed to forgive 80-percent of Iraq's foreign debt. Russia signed on to the international agreement Sunday, even though it is owed billions of dollars in debt wracked up by former dictator Saddam Hussein. Even so, political and economic experts in Iraq are debating the significance of the agreement.

  • Iraq: U.S., European, And Arab Officials Seek Consensus Over Iraq's Future RFE/RL 22 Nov 2004 -- Top U.S. and European officials are meeting with foreign ministers from many of Iraq's neighbors today to discuss Iraq's future. The meeting in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh comes one day after Iraq's major international creditors agreed to deep cuts in Baghdad's debt in an effort to boost the pace of the country's reconstruction.
