HEADLINE: Iraqi Husband Appeals for Return of Abducted Wife

INTRO: The husband of abducted international aid worker Margaret Hassan is appealing for her release. He says he has not heard from the kidnappers who commandeered his wife's car two-days ago in Baghdad. VOA's Greg LaMotte is in the Iraqi capital, and filed this report.

TEXT: Tahseen Ali Hassan made a pubic appeal for his wife's return.

/// HASSAN ACT ///

"Release my wife. She is Iraqi. She is working for a humanitarian organization. And, I ask you to release her."

/// END ACT ///

Margaret Hassan, who has both British and Iraqi citizenship, is the director of operations in Iraq for the humanitarian aid organization, CARE International. She was abducted Tuesday while traveling to her job in Baghdad.

According to her husband, four to five men forced his wife's driver and bodyguard out of the car they were traveling in, scuffled with them, then jumped in the car and sped away, with Ms. Hassan in the backseat.

/// HASSAN ACT ///

"I was really shocked. I could not believe it, because she is not involved in any politics or religion, or anything. And, she is serving this organization for over 12 years, and it was really a shock to me."

/// END ACT ///

Mr. Hassan says he has not heard from his wife's kidnappers, and that no one has claimed responsibility for her abduction. He says he has no idea who would have kidnapped his wife, or what their motives might be.

He says he is optimistic his wife will be set free, because all of the seven previous women known to have been kidnapped in Iraq have been released.

Mr. Hassan, a retired airline worker, says he and his wife of 32 years have lived in Iraq for 30 years. (SIGNED)
