IRAQI POLICE SERVICE GRADUATES NEARLY 1,000 FROM TRAINING

BAGHDAD - The Iraqi Police Service had 955 police officers graduate Oct.7 in Baghdad. The training classes range from a one-week post blast course designed to teach officers techniques used to investigate explosion incidents, to an eight-week basic police training course.

The courses are designed to improve the capabilities of Iraqi police officers and help to further the goal of creating a secure and stable Iraq.

The courses that graduated Oct. 7 include the following:

Basic Police Training course - 805 students (includes 73 females). Students completed the eight-week basic academy that prepares them to serve in the Iraqi police service.

Basic Investigation Course - 35 students. This is a two-week course that focuses on basic criminal investigation and covers such topics such as theft, burglary, arson, robbery, sexual offenses, interview and interrogation techniques and homicide. Participants receive instruction and hands-on training in fingerprinting, photography, tool marks and plaster casting. Several practical skills segments are included. At the conclusion of the course, students are able to conduct a crime scene search as well as conduct routine criminal investigations.

Post Blast - 50 students. This course is designed to teach its students techniques used in investigating post-blast incidents. The course instructs students on how to identify accidental explosions versus criminal bombings. Additionally, this course includes explosives recognition, destructive device components, scene processing, investigative techniques and procedures used in completing a thorough post-blast scene investigation. A final practical exercise is conducted by students to investigate a post-blast incident.

Kidnapping Investigation - 31 students. The Kidnapping Investigation course is a one-week course that focuses on hostage negotiations and introduces police officers to the skills involved in negotiating the successful resolution of hostage and barricade situations. Participants receive instruction in the psychology of the hostage taker, negotiation techniques, surrender scenarios, and first responder responsibilities. Students are given practical experience with negotiation scenarios. At the conclusion of the course, students are able to conduct a successful hostage negotiation.

Organized Crime - 34 students. This three-week course instructs students on basic investigation skills as they relate to organized crime. Specifically, the investigation of crime committed by any group having some type of formalized structure and whose primary objective is to obtain money through illegal activities. Such groups maintain their position through the use of actual or threatened violence, corrupt public officials, graft or extortion, and generally have a significant impact on the people in their locales, region or the country as a whole.
