IRAQI PRESS QUOTES AND COMMENTS, 12 Oct 04

The Coming Elections; A ``Dead End!''- Al-Sharq al-Awsat

Al-Sharq al-Awsat [Baghdad edition of London-based daily Al-Sharq al-Awsat] [From commentary by Khalid al-Qishtini]: "Iraqi democrats are faced with a big dilemma. I have heard that most Iraqis are convinced that the coming elections, assuming they are feasible, will not in fact provide a solution to the security problem, which requires an iron fist backed up by emergency measures and martial law. Now, if you agree with this, then you will be abolishing democracy. If you don't, then you will be killing democracy by disregarding the opinion of the majority. Dead end, don't you think?

``

Al-Zarqawi; A Former Common Criminal Not A Celebrity! ''- Al-Nahdah

Al-Nahdah [Baghdad, daily political newspaper,by Adnan al-Pachachi[From commentary by Abd al-Mun'im al-A'sam]: "A Jordanian friend of mine, who has had no part in the Al-Zarqawi-promotion chorus in the media, has written to me that the women of the Zarqa City cannot help feeling amused at the tales being told about their fellow citizen, Ahmad Fadhiel, (Zarqawi's real name), unduly lending him mythical proportions. They cannot help feeling sorry too for the poor Iraqis who have suffered so much at the hand of their outcast boy, deriding the way an obscure car-thief, a former common criminal, has been made into a celebrity not only by Iraqi officials, but even by Rumsfeld himself. My friend quoted one of these women saying, "Since when has Ahmad learned to speak standard Arabic?"

``

Where is democracy?''- Al-Mada

Al-Mada [Baghdad, daily, independent newspaper published by Al-Mada Media, Culture and Arts Corporation] [From commentary by Khalid Mutlag]: "Where is democracy? Is this the democracy Allawi has promised us?" Thus goes the opposition's standard mantra But, Allawi's democracy is in no way comparable to his predecessor's. It is obviously unfair to compare a former president-for-life ruling by an interim constitution to an interim prime minister whose tenure ends with the writing of a permanent constitution I would like to remind those paragons of democracy who never seem to tire of repeating this mantra on Arab TV shows, that those who endured thirty-five years of dictatorship under Saddam ought to be able to wait a bit for Allawi's two-month-old democracy to bear fruit in the coming January elections
