Al-Zaman [daily, independent, Baghdad edition of London-based Al-Zaman]: [From commentary by Mahmud Hasan Abbas] 02 Oct. 04: "It is of paramount importance at this stage that the forces of democracy should take control of the state apparatus in Iraq as it is this apparatus that invariably plays the most decisive role in providing social, political and economic guidance, channelling public opinion towards the aims desired. This is how Saddam managed to keep Iraq under his control and is still the crux of the present conflict."
Al - Dustur, independent daily published by former journalist Basim al-Sheikh [From editorial by Basim al-Shaykh], 2 Oct. 04 : "No matter what justification might be cited to explain the horrendous massacre of our children last Thursday as an inevitable by-product of battering the US forces, it is clearly the heads of innocent Iraqis that are practically being battered. The perpetrators of these atrocities care nothing for the fact that the scores of innocent Iraqis they kill every day are not collaborators or that, as in this case, they are mere children whose only crime was to seek joy where and when the cowardly hand of terror was to aim a blind blow."
Al-Shira [Baghdad, twice-weekly independent newspaper in Arabic (published on Monday/Thursday)], commentary by Hasan Karim], 2 Oct. 04: "Lying might be forgiven when practised by politicians and secularists as part of the slyness and cunning sometimes necessitated by the very nature of their trade But it is a sorry thing to see some Islamists being drawn into the habit of lying in public without in the least fearing that their lies will soon be exposed, or balking at the potential loss of respect and credibility entailed. This explains the behaviour of some who have been howling and braying, trying to have the public believe the obvious lie that their cities are completely free of Arab infiltrators and that the only fighters there are local elements belonging to a genuine home-grown resistance."
Al-Bayan [Baghdad, daily newspaper in Arabic published by the Islamic Al-Da'wah Party] [From commentary by Salim Rasul] 2 Oct. 04: "Given the way things have evolved recently, France has been increasingly left out of the Iraqi dossier, a very worrying thing for the Chirac government. This has impelled the French to lurk in the shadows, waiting for an opportune moment when they can capitalize on the contradictions of the thorny Iraqi file. The international conference advocated by France comes in this context as a means of pressuring the Americans to let the French have their own slice of the Iraqi cake."
