- U.S. MILITARY/IRAQ VOA 18 Oct 2004 -- The U.S. military in Iraq is investigating a case of insubordination among as many as 19 reservists who refused orders last week to take part in a re-supply mission, saying they lacked the proper equipment to carry out the mission. The American general who until recently was the senior commander of U.S. forces in Iraq says he has also made similar complaints about equipment shortages to the Pentagon.

- First Infantry Division Soldiers Detain Six AIF Suspects in Samarra MNF-I/MNC-I 18 Oct 2004 -- Acting on information provided by an Iraqi citizen, 1st Infantry Division Soldiers from 1st Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment detained six suspected anti-Iraqi forces insurgents in Samarra at about 3 p.m., on Oct. 18.

- BIDEN / IRAQ POLICY VOA 18 Oct 2004 -- In the U.S. presidential race, both the Republican incumbent, President Bush, and the Democratic challenger, Senator John Kerry, have put forth similar visions for Iraq's future, namely to create a stable environment for elections as soon as possible. Delaware Senator Joe Biden, the top Democrat on the Foreign Relations Committee, says Senator Kerry's plan for gaining international cooperation in Iraq would be "more aggressive" than that of Mr. Bush.

- IRAQ / ALLAWI VOA 18 Oct 2004 -- Iraqi interim Prime Minister Iyad Allawi addressed the country's national assembly Monday, saying that while improvements are being made, Iraq still faces a significant security threat from insurgents and terrorists.

- IRAQ: Focus on humanitarian needs in Sunni Triangle IRIN 18 Oct 2004 -- The three cities of Ramadi, Fallujah and Samarrah, west of Baghdad, in the "Sunni triangle" where US troops are fighting insurgents, are in desperate need of medical supplies and other aid, according to hospital staff.

- BRITAIN / IRAQ VOA 18 Oct 2004 -- Britain says it could deploy combat troops near Baghdad to free up U.S. forces for counter-terrorism operations before Iraqi elections planned for January.
- Iraq: U.S. Request For British Redeployment Poses Dilemma For London RFE/RL 18 Oct 2004 -- The United States has made a controversial request to Britain to re-deploy some of its troops in Iraq. The request would involve moving hundreds of British troops from their relatively calm zone in southern Iraq to a potentially more dangerous area nearer Baghdad. The British would replace U.S. troops, who would be sent to take part in a major operation believed to be getting underway against insurgents in Al-Fallujah. British officials say they are studying the U.S. request and no decision has been taken yet.
- AUSTRALIA/IRAQ VOA 18 Oct 2004 -- Australia has turned down a request by the United Nations to send more troops to Iraq to protect U.N. personnel there. Australia has agreed instead to train a contingent of Fijian soldiers for the job.
- IRAQ: NATO consensus on training IRIN 18 Oct 2004 -- North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) officials have reached a consensus with members to send hundreds of military advisers to Iraq this year to train local security forces.
