- U.S. Troops Enter Samarra, Inflict Heavy Insurgent Losses RFE/RL 01 Oct 2004 -- U.S. and Iraqi forces pushed into the rebel Iraqi stronghold of Samarra today to wrest control of the northern town from insurgents.
- IRAQ / SAMARRA VOA 01 Oct 2004 -- U.S. and Iraqi forces have pushed into the insurgent stronghold of Samarra, north of Baghdad and taken control of key government buildings and religious sites. U.S. military officials estimate close to 100 insurgents were killed, and say one U.S. soldier was killed and four were wounded.

- Powell-Belgium-Iraq VOA 01 Oct 2004 -- Secretary of State Powell is defending Bush administration diplomacy on Iraq following criticism by Democratic Presidential candidate John Kerry in Thursday's debate that the United States had shunted allies aside in a rush to war against Saddam Hussein. He spoke after talks Friday with Belgian Foreign Minister Karel De Gucht.
- U.S.: Bush, Kerry Focus On Iraq In First Preelection Debate RFE/RL 01 Oct 2004 -- The U.S. intervention in Iraq dominated the first presidential debate (file photo) U.S. President George W. Bush and Senator John Kerry (Democrat, Massachusetts), his challenger for the White House, faced each other last night at the University of Miami in the first of three preelection debates. The topic was foreign policy, and more than an hour of the 90-minute session was devoted to the war in Iraq. The debates are seen as crucial. Most polls show Bush with a lead only a month before the 2 November election, and the three debates could help crystallize the perceptions of the tens of millions of voters who are expected to watch the three contests.

- Security Council urges countries to contribute forces to protect UN in Iraq UN News Centre 01 Oct 2004 -- The Security Council today welcomed proposals by Secretary-General Kofi Annan regarding security arrangements for the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), including close protection troops for senior UN staff, and urged Members States to contribute to the units.
