White House Report, September 29: Iraq, U.K.

McClellan defends removing Saddam despite not finding WMD stockpiles

Even though stockpiles of weapons of mass destruction have not been found in Iraq, White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan says President Bush and British Prime Minister Tony Blair both believe that the removal of Saddam Hussein's regime was "the right decision."

According to press reports, Prime Minister Blair told Britain's Labour Party's Annual Conference September 28 that he had been wrong in his claim that Iraq possessed weapons of mass destruction. However, he added, "I can never apologize, sincerely at least, for removing Saddam. The world is a better place with Saddam in prison."

McClellan, briefing reporters September 29, said, "We all expected to find the stockpiles, but the decision to remove Saddam Hussein, as Prime Minister Blair reiterated again yesterday, was the right decision, because he was a threat and the world is better off with Saddam Hussein removed from power."

"[Hussein] was a threat that we could no longer afford to ignore," McClellan said.
