IRAQI COURT SENDS INSURGENTS TO JAIL
BAGHDAD, Iraq - The possession of improvised explosive devices earned six insurgents three-year prison terms during trials before the Central Criminal Court of Iraq on Sunday.
In the first case, Marines from the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force arrested two individuals in Ar Ramidi after they observed the men digging a hole alongside a road to set up an IED made from an artillery round. The defendants claimed they were trying to disarm the device. The two 21-year-old defendants were both found guilty and received three-year sentences.
In the second case, Soldiers from the 1st Cavalry Division stopped the four defendants, ranging in ages from 22 to 29 years old, in their car at a routine traffic control point on May 28, 2004, in Sadr City and found an IED made out of a rocket with a wire attached. The defendants claimed they had bought the rocket in order to sell it to Multi-National Forces for more money. After reviewing the evidence and considering testimonies, the court found the four defendants guilty and sentenced them each to three-year prison terms.
Upon conviction, all defendants are turned over to the Iraqi Corrections Service to serve their sentences.
To date, the Central Criminal Court of Iraq has tried 76 cases involving 117 suspected insurgents for anti-Iraqi activities targeting MNF-I and threatening the security of Iraq. These proceedings have resulted in 90 individual convictions and 31 acquittals, with sentences ranging to 30-years imprisonment
