Additional Sailors Charged in Alleged Detainee Abuse

SAN DIEGO (NNS) -- Three Sailors attached to Naval Special Warfare Command face disciplinary action based on evidence obtained during an ongoing investigation into alleged detainee abuse in Iraq from October 2003 to April 2004.
The charges under the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ) against the three Sailors include: Failure to Report Abuse to Superior Authorities (UCMJ Art. 92), Dereliction of Duty (UCMJ Art. 92), Maltreatment of Detainees (UCMJ Art. 93), Assault (UCMJ Art. 128), Aggravated Assault with Intent to Cause Death or Serious Bodily Harm (UCMJ Art. 128), Conduct Unbecoming a member of the U.S. military (UCMJ Art. 133), Obstruction of Justice (UCMJ Art. 134), and Assault with a Dangerous Weapon (UCMJ Art. 128).
The dates for any disciplinary hearings have not yet been set. The Naval Criminal Investigative Service investigation remains open.
These three Sailors charged are in addition to four Sailors charged Sept. 2. This brings to seven the total number of Sailors attached to Naval Special Warfare Command charged with offenses.
The Navy takes all allegations of abuse seriously and will conduct a review of all available evidence involved in this case.
