Pakistan rules out sending troops to Iraq
IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency
Islamabad, Sept 23, IRNA -- Pakistan on Thursday ruled out dispatching its army to war-ravaged Iraq "under present circumstances". "Pakistan is not sending troops to Iraq under present ircumstances," Foreign Office Spokesman told IRNA on phone. He was asked to comment on press reports quoting interim Iraqi Prime Minister Ayad Allawi as saying that he urged Pakistani President General Pervez Musharraf to commit his country`s troops to Iraq. Allawi met Musharraf on Wednesday on the sidelines of the on-going UN General Assembly in New York during which he reportedly called for Pakistan`s military contribution to Iraq. Islamabad has rebuffed US-British pressures on sending its army men to Iraq, pre-conditioning it to a formal request by the Iraqi government, contribution of other Islamic states, and approval of the parliament.
