Asefi: Foreign ministry continuing its efforts to obtain release of abducted diplomat

Tehran, Sept 5, IRNA -- Foreign Ministry spokesman Hamid Reza Asefi 
here Sunday said that the ministry is continuing its efforts to 
locate and obtain the release of an Iranian diplomat abducted in 
Iraq. 
Fereydoun Jahani, an experienced diplomat with the Iranian 
Foreign Ministry, was abducted on August 4 by unknown men while he 
was on his way to Karbala to head Iran`s consular mission there. 
Since then he has not been located and there have been no reports 
as to his whereabouts. 
Speaking at his weekly press briefing, Asefi said the Iraqi 
delegation that recently visited Iran promised to follow up the case 
of the abducted diplomat. 
He said the Iranian charge d`affaires in Iraq, who is active in 
the work there, is also doing all he can to facilitiate Jahani`s 
release and that he was hopeful the Iranian diplomat would be 
released soon. 
"According to our information, Jahani is alive and in good 
health," Asefi added. 
On the outcome of the Iraqi delegation`s visit to Iran, he said 
the results were positive. 
As to the accusations the Islamic Republic of Iran is interfering 
in the domestic affairs of neighboring Iraq, Asefi said there are 
no written evidences to support these accusations. 
On the fate of Imam Moussa Sadr, leader of the Lebanese Shiites 
who went missing during a visit to Libya in 1978, he said Tehran has 
over the years exerted tremendous effort to locate Imam Sadr. 
Tehran is doing all that it can to discover what happened to him, 
he said, adding that it will continue to do so as knowing the fate of 
the Lebanese grand cleric is of vital importance.
