IRAQI PRESS QUOTES, 27 Sep 04

Iraqi file has entered the US election marathon- Al-Bayan

Al-Bayan [Baghdad, daily newspaper in Arabic published by the Islamic Al-Da'wah Party]27 Sep 04: [From opinion by Salim Rasul] "The Iraqi file has entered the US election marathon and become the main concern of the presidential candidates, with each shaping an opinion of Iraq's future Both candidates address the American people, and the Iraqis have nothing to do with all this But what Iraqis mean to the two US parties is that they are the arena for implementing their electoral programmes, even though they do not necessarily match Iraqis' political tendencies The prime minister's visit to the United States has shown the powerful Iraqi card in the race to the White House However, if the card was very effective, there would be no major US role in achieving what the Iraqis aspire to, for this card would be spared for the next elections."

US Administration is trying to keep the no-solution state in Iraq - Al-Mu'tamar

Al-Mu'tamar [Baghdad, daily newspaper in Arabic published by the Iraqi National Congress] [From article by Ali Sabir Muhammad] 27 Sep 04: "The delay in handling the deteriorating security situation and the spiralling violence in Iraq have led some into the belief that the US Administration is premeditatedly trying to keep the no-solution state and turn Iraq into a burial ground for terrorists. This perception could hold true for once, though it contradicts the US strategy in the region We believe that the delay is caused by waiting for the end of presidential elections, fearing from falling into slippery slopes of incalculable consequences and expecting new developments that could run out of control He is mistaken whoever imagines that Bush's failure and Kerry's victory will change the US agenda in Iraq. The Iraqi file cannot change with the change of the president as has been the case with the third world countries."

Italian FM: We are ready to leave Iraq when our friends ask us to- Al-Zaman

Al-Zaman [daily, independent, Baghdad edition of London-based Al-Zaman]: 27 Sep 04: [From commentary by Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini] "Whoever harms our two hostages will not only hurt them, their families, friends, loved ones and nation. He will also harm the Iraqi people we are ready to leave Iraq when our friends ask us to. We will go when the Iraqi people tell us they do not need our volunteers, engineers and soldiers who build roads and bridges When the Iraqi government says our presence is no longer necessary, it will be a happy day. This means Iraq is capable of standing on its feet without any help. It will be a happy day because we will celebrate the return of our men and women who have chosen the mission of bringing peace to the whole world Italy has long had faith in dialogue between religions and civilizations as an essential political response to face up to the violence of blind terrorism whose fire burns us all with no discrimination between Christians or Muslims, west or east, western and Arab states."
