``

US, UK behind attacks on foreign civilians'' - Voice of the Mujahidin

SCIRI's Voice of the Mujahidin in Arabic,Iran, 24 Sep 04 : A commentary broadcast on the Iraqi Shi'i group's Voice of the Mujahidin radio on 24 September accused the US and Britain of being behind attacks on foreign civilians in Iraq. Such attacks are aimed at discrediting the Iraqi resistance and obstructing the holding of elections, the radio alleged. "Some who are tied to US and Zionist circles, have exploited the current clashes to direct their violence against non-Iraqi workers, drivers and journalists, and some workers in humanitarian organizations and UN workers, with the aim of harming the Iraqi resistance. By this, these people do not hesitate to destroy civilian areas and homes in addition to targeting police posts and state offices. In most cases, these people do not target US forces. This makes us certain that the perpetrators of these acts are British and US teams that arrived for this purpose to sow seeds of sedition and discord among the Iraqi people, and [certain] that they are not from the Iraqi resistance." The radio said similar views were expressed in an article that was published recently in the UK Independent newspaper.

Allawi speech gave a false impression of the situation in Iraq - Voice of the Mujahidin

SCIRI's Voice of the Mujahidin in Arabic,Iran, 24 Sep 04 : A commentary broadcast by the Iraqi Shi'i group's Iran-based radio station Voice of the Mujahidin criticized Iyad Allawi's speech to the US Congress, saying it gave a false impression of the situation in the country. "Any observer of the situation in Iraq cannot see the positive and very optimistic picture that Iyad Allawi painted in his speech, which was fully dedicated to serving Bush's election campaign, so much so that Allawi criticized the American media, saying they focus only on the tragic and painful scenes in Iraq, as if he wanted to tell these media: Deceive the public and don't mention these facts," it said. "What happened at US Congress was in fact a programmed scenario meant to give false impressions about the Iraqi situation, present things not as they really stand, and paint a rosy picture inconsistent with the facts and dimensions of the Iraqi reality. Consequently, that festival was yet another attempt to entrench the conspiracy that is being implemented by these parties, which do not care about the Iraqi people's interests and genuine ambitions."

Fall of Iraqi tyranny has not solved all problems - Al-Sharq al-Awsat

Al-Sharq al-Awsat [Baghdad edition of London-based daily Al-Sharq al-Awsat, Saudi-owned] [From commentary by Hashim Salih]: "The fall of tyranny in Iraq is not, in itself, sufficient grounds to assume that all the problems there have been solved for good, nor does it mean that Iraqis have all turned democrats overnight. True, the neocons have certainly shown themselves to be incredibly immature on this point, both intellectually and politically, yet Iraq will eventually emerge from its terrible ordeal, having paid a staggeringly high price".

Americans went to Iraq to set up a secular system- Baghdad

Baghdad [Baghdad, daily newspaper in Arabic published by the Iraqi National Accord Movement] [From commentary by Nizar Haydar]: "The Americans went to Iraq with a plan to set up a secular system of government there, on the assumption that this is a development necessitated by the drive towards globalization. It should be absolutely clear to all that can see and hear that secularism, in whatever form, is strongly rejected by Iraqis owing to the fact that religious belief runs deep in the individual as well as collective Iraqi psyche."

Extremist factions presence in cities creates problems for people living there- Al-Bayan

Al-Bayan [Baghdad, daily newspaper in Arabic published by the Islamic Al-Da'wah Party] [From editorial]: "Extremist factions are undoubtedly aware that their armed presence in cities that have been the scene of fighting creates big problems for the people living there... The approach the government has taken to address this problem on the basis of disarming rebel factions... has run into so many obstacles and complications that any peaceful approach to the problem has become too banal to pursue."

Iraqi TV viewers switch to stations with domestic programs, Al-Zaman

Al-Zaman [daily, independent, Baghdad edition of London-based Al-Zaman] 22, Sep 04,: Newly launched Iraqi channels with a focus on domestic affairs now seize more than 20% of the television viewing in Iraq, according to a survey. The survey, by Baghdad University's Centre for Psychological Studies, also reveals that Iraqi TV viewers are no longer as enchanted by major Arab satellite news channels. While 64.4% still watch Arabic (non-Iraqi) channels, the viewers have switched away from major television news outlets such as Aljazeera and Alarabiya.Foreign channels broadcasting in Arabic have seen their television market share in Iraq drop to about 13%, the study says. The findings are a blow to the Qatar-based Aljazeera and the UAE-based Alarabiya whose viewing has slumped to 15.1% and 7% respectively, according to the study. On the other hand, the Egyptian satellite channel where entertainment dominates programming attracts the largest number of Iraqi television viewers. The study shows that 24.2% of the 2,000 respondents who took part in the investigation watch the Egyptian channel regularly. Some 18.1% still watch the Lebanese LBC and 6.1% view the Saudi MBC. The respondents were given a list of ten top Arabic television channels to choose from. They were also given a list containing nine major Iraqi channels beamed via satellite across the country. More than half of them (53.1%) said they preferred al-Shariqiya, a newly launched 24-hour channel concentrating mostly on Iraqi affairs and domestic series and soap operas. The survey, to be published on Thursday, also finds that 34.2% of viewers watch al-Iraqiya, another satellite channel with an interest on domestic affairs. The US-sponsored al-Hurrah is only watched by 2.7% of viewers, the study shows. Meantime, the study shows that Iraqis on average watch television for about 180 minutes a day.
