HOSTAGES & PRISONERS
Profile of Jama'at al-Tawhid wa-al-Jihad group

The Jama'at al-Tawhid wa-al-Jihad Abu-Musab al-Zarqawi group has claimed the recent kidnap of two Americans and a Briton in Baghdad, and the execution of two of them. Since the end of the Iraq conflict, Jama'at al-Tawhid wa-al-Jihad - believed to have links with al-Qaeda - have claimed responsibility for a number of attacks, as well as the kidnapping and beheading of both military personnel and civilians. The group is said to be led by Abu-Musab al-Zarqawi. Imprisoned in Jordan during the early 90s, Zarqawi has become Iraq's most-wanted man. He has been linked with both al-Qaeda and the Ansar al-Islam movement in northern Iraq. The US said that many attacks, including the killing of around 185 Shia worshippers celebrating the religious festival of Ashura in bombings in Karbala and Baghdad, bear the hallmarks of operations planned by Zarqawi.
Reward for capture: The US has vowed to capture Zarqawi, offering a multi-million dollar reward for information leading to his death or capture. Although some sources describe the Zarqawi group and Tawhid and Jihad as separate entities, internet postings and video footage suggest that Zarqawi is in charge. The ideology of Jama'at al-Tawhid wa-al-Jihad, whose name means Unity and Jihad, seems to be similar to that of al-Qaeda, but with a focus on Iraq. An extremist, fundamentalist Sunni group, it sees itself as engaged in a struggle against US "crusaders", contrasting the strict monotheism of Islam to the "polytheist" Christian Trinity. They perceive the invasion of Iraq as a step towards a Greater Israel, and reject Shia Muslims as "al-Rafidah" or rejectionists. They view the Kurds as enemies, partly because of their alleged links with Jewish interests.

Forty-nine Iraqi prisoners released- Al-Sharqiyah TV

Al-Sharqiyah Satellite Channel, Baghdad, in Arabic, 22 Sep 04: Iraqi news channel Al-Sharqiyah reported on 22 September that 49 detainees had been released that day "within the framework of reviewing the files of Iraqi prisoners".

IRAQI PRESS QUOTES, 22 Sep 04
No interim government can draw up a strategy- Al-Adala

Al-Adalah [Baghdad, twice-weekly newspaper in Arabic published by the Supreme Council of the Islamic Revolution in Iraq (SCIRI)] [From editorial] "No interim government can draw up a strategy capable of introducing the political transformations, most important of which combating violence and terrorism and addressing the deteriorating economic situation which mean much to Iraqis, unless it enjoys popular support and election legitimacy... Therefore, we believe the sound view of the current reality in Iraq while we seek useful solutions, should depend on elections as a real route to a healthy Iraq, though dear sacrifices will be on the way. However, the national interest necessitates treading this line if there is true intention to build a new, stable, prosperous Iraq."

If the Al-Sadr movement wins the election, would this please America?- Ishraqat Al-Sadr

Ishraqat al-Sadr [Baghdad, weekly newspaper in Arabic published by the Sadrist Movement] "If the Al-Sadr movement joined the elections and achieved outright victory, would this please America, the advocate of freedom and democracy and liberator of people, as it claims, though it knew that such victory could not serve its interests?... The Al-SAdr movement, with its courageous leadership, is a stumbling block in the way of US political designs in the region, especially since America is looking forward to finding regimes and rulers more loyal than Saddam, Al-Qadhafi and others in the Gulf region and the Arab homeland after it has embarked on a plan to Americanize the world under cover of globalization..."

Next Elections will be Fabricated-Al-Manarah

Al-Manarah [Basra, daily independent newspaper in Arabic published by the Voice of the South Press,] [From editorial by Khalaf al-Munshidi] "There is a silent call from different trends in the south to unite to liberate of Iraq. I publicly encourage such a call, in order to put an end to all the injustice around, since no good is expected from the coming elections... The forthcoming elections will be a new chapter of forgery, and whoever thinks of nominating himself should balance things well because there will be no room for outsiders... Our next general elections will be ready-made, pre-fabricated, beyond the law and norms, tailored to their needs to ensure they will stay in power."
