Al-Sharq al-Awsat web site [Baghdad edition of London-based daily Al-Sharq al-Awsat, Saudi-owned] (19 Sep 2004): A Turkomans representative in Iraqi Interim National Assembly, Songul Chapuk, has accused the Kurds of attacking the city of Tall Afar in order to gain a footbold there and establish headquarters for Kurdish political parties, Al-Sharq al-Awsat newspaper web site reported on 19 September. The paper quoted Chapuk saying that after the predominantly Turkoman and Arab city opposed the presence of Kurdish forces there, "Iraqi security organs and US forces were told that there were terrorists in the city, prompting them to occupy it without verifying the truth about the accuracy of the reports". She said Turkomans and Arabs had been excluded from the police force and "completely" replaced by Kurdish police officers and policemen as a result. "People from Tall Afar have confirmed to me this fact and also confirmed that there were no terrorists in the city," she said. She said the Iraqi government had not responded to demands that the bombardment of the city and displacement of its people be stopped and had not to date explained the attack. She also criticized what she called the "Kurdicizing" of Kirkuk, accusing the authorities there of evicting 5,000 Arab families and replacing them with Turkish, Iranian and Syrian Kurds. Chapuk said state-owned residential tracts of land had also been distributed to more than 60,000 non-Iraqi Kurds who had moved to Kirkuk. She added that the former regime had only evicted 5,000 families from the city so the newcomers were not just returning Iraqi Kurds.

Al-Sharq al-Awsat [Baghdad edition of London-based daily Al-Sharq al-Awsat, Saudi-owned] ] [From commentary by Bilal al-Hassan]15 Sep 04: "If we take a quick look at the political movements now at work inside Iraq, to the exclusion of the US-installed government and its supporters, we cannot fail to see the country teaming with various political groups whose communiques and attitudes show strong rejection of the occupation and objection to the destructively coercive measures taken by the occupying forces against Iraqi cities under the pretext of preparing the ground for the coming elections. It is really unfortunate that these genuine Iraqi forces, which reject the present occupation as much as they did the former regime, are hardly given a chance to make themselves heard on the Arab media."

Al-Nahdah [Baghdad, daily political newspaper,by Adnan al-Pachachi] [From commentary by Abd al-Mun'im al-A'sam]15 Sep 04: "It is understandable that we should, temporarily, put up with the bitterness of half solutions to the most serious of our problems in preference to the sweetness of drastic solutions, for fear of having to endure the far more bitter choice of having no solution at all, which would mean that we will end up wandering aimlessly in the middle of nowhere, begging everyone we meet for alms I say, we will, for now, accept what is bitter to ward off what may be even more so, without ignoring - for that is something we must never do - the looming danger beginning to emerge at the centre of this equation, namely that, whether we like it or not, the bitter option has, with the passage of time, gradually become a permanent must while the more bitter one has remained a mere hypothesis."
