DEFENCE AND SECURITY

36 University Professors Assassinated In 18 Months

(London-based Azzaman, Political and independent daily, issued by Saad al-Bazaz, 14 Sep 04) - Some 36 university professors have been killed in the 18 months since the fall of the regime of Saddam Hussein, according to the minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research. The minister, Tahir al-Bakaa, made the remarks as he pleaded with the notables and tribal leaders in the restive western Province of Ramadi to help release a university chancellor who was taken hostage recently. The chancellor, Dr. Abdulhadi al-Hiti, was reportedly kidnapped while on a visit to the College of Dentistry within the University campus.``These acts adversely affect the dissemination science and work of scientists in the country,'' the minister told them in a meeting. The province is a stronghold for militants and insurgents fighting US troops and their pro-Iraqi police. The minister has also held several meetings with Interior Ministry officials on how to protect university campuses across the country.Senior university faculty members frequently receive assassination and abduction threats and many are believed to have left the country as a result.Among the assassinated professors, Al-Bakaa said, 10 were from Baghdad, six from Mosul and three from Basra.

``
Nobody Reads Arabic Outside the Arab World"- Al-Sharq Al-Awsat

Al-Sharq al-Awsat [Baghdad edition of London-based independent daily newspaper, Saudi-owned] [From commentary by Abd al-Rahman al-Rashid]: "Since the phenomenal emergence of terrorism in the late 1990's, Arab intellectuals have never ceased discussing and analysing its various facets, with special attention to the dangers involved in the growing impact of fundamentalist discourse on Arab youth. It isn't true that it took such shocking incidents as the Russian school trauma or the kidnappings of truckers, cooks and journalists in Iraq to arouse our interest in this phenomenon. In fact, we have been writing about it for years. The problem is that nobody reads Arabic outside the Arab world."

``

Who Are The Real Enemies Of The People?'' Al-Bayyinah

( Al-Bayyinah political weekly of the Hezbollah movement in Iraq [From editorial]: "Why does the government not lay bare all the facts before the public eye so that everyone knows who the real enemies of the people are? Why is all this procrastination in the reconstruction process, where any progress made will certainly mitigate violence? Why are those who have taken to kidnapping foreigners allowed to go free although they have been identified and are known to be a limited number of dissenters? Furthermore, the government is accused by some of having excluded several well-known national figureheads and of giving government posts to certain individuals closely affiliated with the toppled regime. These are all legitimate queries requiring explanation from the prime minister, who, despite the extremely chaotic situation he is facing, has shown strong determination to stand up to the enemies of the homeland and crush them at any cost."

Al-Alussi's Visit To Israel Spells Nothing New, Addustour

(Addustour, independent daily published by former journalist Basim al-Sheikh,) [From editorial by Basim al-Shaykh]: "News of Al-Alussi's visit to Israel spells nothing new. It is just a step in a series of steps to be taken in the context of an already initiated scheme to address future Iraqi-Israeli relations. According to the scheme envisioned, countries bordering Iraq are to be pressured by Israel to conclude long-term agreements whereby they commit themselves to a certain anti-terror, anti-violence mechanism now that there has been ample proof that Iraq is likely to become a major hotbed of international terrorism."

Not All Americans Are Devoid Of Human Feelings, Al-Bayan

Al-Bayan [Baghdad, daily newspaper in Arabic published by the Islamic Al-Da'wah Party] [From editorial]: "We do not claim that all Americans are devoid of human feelings, nor can we imagine that it is in America's interest to deepen anti-American sentiment by killing innocent civilians, but we have learned the hard way that Americans are not completely trustworthy. However, is this not to say that we should blame all our calamities on the Americans alone? Does our interim government bear no responsibility at all for certain cases of escalation, or for giving the Americans a free hand to decide who, where and when to bomb?"

ATES FROM IRAQI KURDISH MEDIA , 14 September 2004:

Khabat daily, KDP mouthpiece, Erbil

The KDP leader Massoud Barzani and his politburo received yesterday their counterparts from Kurdistan Islamic Union for discussion on bilateral ties. Barzani proposed setting up a joint high committee at leadership level to enhance the relations and coordinate efforts for the common goals of the two parties. The two sides also discussed the elections in Iraq and Kurdistan and ways of Kurdistan political parties' participation in those elections. The Governor of Dahuk escaped an assassination attempt yesterday morning while he was going to his office. A remote-controlled TNT package was exploded on Mitterrand Street as the Governor's convoy was passing by and the incident went without human casualties, a spokesperson for the central security committee at the Governorate told the press. The Governor commented on the failed attempt saying Kurdistan enemies were upset at the accomplished reconstruction, development achieved in Kurdistan and the prevailing security. The Iraqi Turcoman Front (ITF) lashed at the Iraqi federal government very hard accusing it of collaboration wit the USA for eliminating the Turcomans in Iraq. During Monday's meeting of Kirkuk Governorate Municipal Council (KMC), a Turcoman member affiliated to the ITF requested the KMC to help halting the US attacks on Talaa'far (west of Mosul). She referred to a memorandum addressed to the Iraqi president, his PM and the UN Secretary-General to that effect. On Sunday, the ITF Kirkuk HQ hosted a meeting between a number of chauvinist Arabs and Turcoman parties affiliated to the ITF. The meeting participants set up a work plan for halting return of Kurdish IDPs to Kirkuk, sending back those who have already returned and camped in the city, decreasing the number of Kurdish policemen and directors of governmental departments and suspending the works of [KMC-established] IDPs committee. In Mosul, insurgents fired at a police patrol in an industrial area killing 4 policemen and wounding another 7 Monday evening. A mortar attack on another police station resulted in the death of one policeman and injury of 4 others. Local KDP and administrative officials in Haji Omeran and Wartae towns north of Erbil laid corner stones for the construction of internal roads The court in Erbil launched investigations into the suicide of two female students of a secondary school in the city.
