Al-Bayan [Baghdad, daily newspaper in Arabic published by the Islamic Al-Da'wah Party, 11 Sep 04]- Al-Bayan newpsaper on 11 September carried an article criticizing the Iraqi government for apparently failing to formulate a "clear approach" on dealing with hostage-taking and its perpetrators. "The fact that the saga is reoccurring has prompted some people to say that there are two states in Iraq, one for the current government and another for (the kidnappers)!" The article concludes that the government should not let itself be "bitten several times from the same hole without learning a lesson and responding".

Iraqi TV asks ICRC spokeswoman about 'ghost' prisoners- Al-Sharqiyah TV

(Al-Sharqiyah Satellite Channel, Baghdad, in Arabic, 11 Sep 04) Iraq's Al-Sharqiyah TV on 11 September questioned a spokeswoman for the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) about allegations that 100 Iraqi prisoners were being held secretly by the US forces in Iraq. The spokeswoman, Nada Dumani, said that international humanitarian laws forbade the holding of prisoners in this way, as during a period of occupation, the names of all prisoners had to be recorded. Asked what steps the ICRC intended to take in response to the allegations, Dumani said that the organization would call on the authorities to allow the ICRC to visit any such "ghost" prisoners still in detention.

IRAQI PRESS QUOTES, 11 sep 04

Association of Muslim Scholars found itself in an unenviable situation- Baghdad

Baghdad [Baghdad, daily newspaper in Arabic published by the Iraqi National Accord Movement] 11 Sept: [From opinion by Ma'd al-Shimmari] "The Association of Muslim Scholars found itself in an unenviable situation when asked by the so-called underground Islamic army (Black Banner Groups) to issue a clear edict legalizing the kidnap of foreigners in Iraq and whoever collaborates with the occupation including Iraqis. There is no Koranic verse that licences the killing of innocent civilians. This association has to prove it has no links to those criminals by revealing their hideouts and mobilizing people in the Sunni areas to look for them, force them out of their holes and hand them over to the Iraqi government. In so doing, they will remove all doubts and hush all voices that charge them with baseless accusations." Al-Bayan [Baghdad, daily newspaper in Arabic published by the Islamic Al-Da'wah Party] 11 Sept: [From commentary by Inas Adil Shakir] "The time has come for Muslims before others to face up to those who want to kidnap Islam just as they kidnap innocent children. This is the real jihad of this age and this is our duty as Muslim believers towards our true religion. A "jihad" erecting its banners on a pile of corpses and body parts of children, women, elderly and innocent people is nothing but a satanic war."

The Situation In Al-Fallujah, Al-Ramadi, Tell Afar And Al-Sadr City, Al-Shira

Al-Shira [Baghdad, twice-weekly independent newspaper in Arabic (published on Monday/Thursday)] 11 Sept: [From commentary by Muhammad Bidaydi] "Whoever observes the situation in Al-Fallujah, Al-Ramadi, Tell Afar and Al-Sadr City must ask a key question: Where are their residents and why do they give in to these groups of masked men who do not belong to them and with whom the only means of communication is weapons? The worst result of the phenomenon of community's passivity and deficient immunity to challenges is that it creates a favourable climate for the birth of a new dictator who confiscates people's freedoms, dreams and dignity."

Iraqis Are Victims Of 9/11- Azzaman

(London-based Azzaman, Political and independent daily, issued by Saad al-Bazaz 11 Sep 04, from commentery By Majed al-Samarai) It was painful to see Iraq descending into a minefield tearing the bodies of its children, women and the elderly only months after 9/11.And as the US marks the third anniversary of 11 September 2001 attacks in which around 3,000 people died, Iraq has become the main battlefield for a world which has declared an open war against terrorism.Iraqis today are the first victims of 9/11. Their country has turned into an arena dotted with the body parts of innocent people killed in what can be described as an ongoing 9/11.Iraqis were happy to see an end to the oppressive regime of Saddam Hussein. They had dreams of a peaceful, civilized and democratic state. They had no idea that the so-called ``shock and awe'' war that toppled Saddam Hussein was part of the pre-emptive strategy the US adopted to settle scores around the world. As a result of that war Iraq has become an open field for terrorist gangs and murderous intelligence agencies whose only aim is to settle their own accounts with Washington on Iraqi soil. Our children, women, men, police officers, army personnel and officials are being killed and maimed on a daily basis. The ongoing conflict is tearing the country apart with the number of Iraqi victims in tens of thousands. The virus of terrorism and violence was imported to our country after the war the US waged against Saddam Hussein in what appeared to be retaliation for 9/11.To all those who carried this virus to our land, pushed its barbaric elements into our homes, schools and universities including the ones who opened the country for this kind of vicious war, we say please leave and take your battle away from us.Let 9/11 continue to be remembered as an international day to fight terrorism; but not on our land.
