HEALTH
Rising Child Mortality, 'New Diseases From War- Al-Adala

(Al-Adala, Baghdad, twice-weekly by the Supreme Council of the Islamic Revolution in Iraq SCIRI, 07 Sep 2004) The effects of the war have started to show on the health of Iraqis, Baghdad's Al-Adalah newspaper reported on 7 September. The paper said these effects have "been deliberately ignored for political reasons". It said statistics comparing 2003 and 2004 show that child mortality in 2004 increased by 27 percent over the previous year. Birth rates are also reported as having fallen by 24 percent. The paper notes that some statistics show an increase in mental and emotional conditions, increasing cases of insterility and a rise in reports of skin allergies. Dr Nahid al-Rubay'i, director of the Mental Hospital in Baghdad, is quoted as saying that the diseases have increased by more than three times since the war. Unless these effects are tackled, they will increase, the paper said and it called for concerned authorities to take action.

Iraqi Doctors concerned at increasing reports of cysts in pregnant women:

It said the phenomenon has prompted Iraq's Health Ministry to conduct a joint study with international health organizations.

IRAQI PRESS QUOTES, 08 Sep 04

What we most fear is simple-minded people driven behind the slogans- Al-Dustur

Al-Dustur editorial by Basim al-Shaykh [Baghdad, daily independent newspaper in Arabic]: What we most fear is for the simple-minded people to get driven behind the slogans promoted by some parties that do not want to see Iraqis in a stable situation ready for a new beginning, healing their wounds and building their country despite the challenges... All parties, whether the government or the political forces and movements, should, therefore, join hands to find solutions with closed, rather than loose ends to help us out of the crisis. Otherwise, we will give saboteurs a golden opportunity to wreak havoc with the country."

Why have kidnappings, beheadings and Internet video films, Ishraqat al-Sadr

Ishraqat al-Sadr [Baghdad, weekly newspaper in Arabic published by the Sadrist Movement]: Why have kidnappings, beheadings and Internet video films... reached a crescendo these days?... We believe this rise is directly linked to the arrangements by the US Republican Party Convention to re-elect President Bush for a second term. These events serve the president while delivering speeches charged with anti-terror remarks and exaggerated fears from Islamic organizations, be they real or fake.

Who counts on testing DNA of Izzat al-Duri or any of Saddam's aides, Al-Zaman

Al-Zaman [daily, independent, Baghdad edition of London-based Al-Zaman] commentary by Fatih Abd-al-Salam: Who counts on testing the DNA of Izzat al-Duri or any of Saddam's aides, who persecuted Iraqis for thirty years, to verify their identity? No Iraqi fails to recognize Al-Duri or other Saddam henchmen, unless they have been disfigured by a bomb, fire or others... Show all the wanted criminals to the Iraqis themselves and they will tell you who they are with no need for a chemical test... Victims never mistake their killers.
