The Baghdad governor escaped an assassination attempt in central Baghdad this morning, and the Mosul deputy's son is assassinated by unidentified gunmen
(London-based Azzaman, Political and independent daily, issued by Saad al-Bazaz, [commentary by Fatih Abd al-Salam]: The Iraqi government cannot overstep Al-Jazeera satellite TV station, simply because the US administration itself has failed to do so. In fact, it is very likely that the latter is trying to get others to do the job it couldn't bring itself to do. Banning Al-Jazeera from operating in Iraq can prove immensely damaging, as this will drive it to cover Iraqi events from the outside, with the additional effect of a negative reaction to the ban... Airwaves are free and allow access to all satellite stations. A local administrative ban would, therefore, mean nothing to channels enjoying vast audiences, for their addicted viewers will keep seeking them, having grown even more interested thanks to the ban itself.
(Al-Sharq Al-Awsat, London-based, Baghdad edition independent daily, Saudi-owned) [commentary by Ahmad al-Ruba'ii]: Since the two French journalists were kidnapped last week, I have not been able to avoid feeling sad following up commentaries and statements by a host of intellectuals and politicians, all strongly demanding their release on the grounds that France's "fair" Middle East policy warrants a better reward. This eclecticism in denouncing kidnapping as a terror tactic is quite objectionable. Demanding the release of French hostages on the grounds that France has demonstrated a "positive" stance can only mean that we would keep silent about the kidnapping of other innocent individuals if their governments happened to have a different attitude to Arab issues, as is the case of the twelve Nepalese workers, whose grisly beheading was met with terrible silence.
(Al-Adala, Baghdad, twice-weekly by the Supreme Council of the Islamic Revolution in Iraq SCIRI) [commentary by Sayyid Muhammad al-Haydari]: The Supreme Religious Authority [Marji'iyah] has proved its ability and effectiveness in resolving the thorniest crises within the framework of comprehensive political reform. This makes it incumbent upon Iraqi political forces seeking to accomplish full sovereignty for Iraq and to implement political reforms to take a bold stand in support of this Authority to maintain security and stability in Iraq. This would pave the way towards holding elections and drafting a permanent constitution for the country. This is particularly vital in light of the fact that Iraqi political forces, both within and outside the governing body, both Islamist and non-Islamist, have not been able, on their own, to address the tempestuous crises gripping present-day Iraq. It is even more vital, given the fact that what the Supreme Religious Authority is trying to achieve at this stage, is to bolster democratic reforms in the context of turning Iraq into a constitutional, pluralistic and independent state, a form of government in which it is totally up to the people to decide [on how the affairs of their country should be managed.]
