IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency
Riyadh, Aug 13, IRNA -- Iraq`s National Conference is scheduled to be held on Sunday, sources quoted Iraqi interim Prime Minister Iyad Allawi as saying on Friday. The delayed conference is to be held to select the members of a 100-member national council, added the sources, predicted however that the conference will be likely postponed due to the latest developments in the country, bloody clashes in Najaf in particular. US forces, backed by tanks and aircraft, spearheaded a massive assault on the holy city of Najaf, Friday morning to crash the resistance of supporters of Iraqi Shi`ite cleric Moqtada Sadr. Moqtada Sadr was reportedly wounded in US bombardment of the holy city of Najaf earlier in the day but there has been no official confirmation yet. Some 1,200 people were arrested in the city of Najaf in joint military operations of US and Iraqi forces, a Riyadh-based daily quoted Iraq`s Defence Minister Hazim al-Shalaan. A considerable amount of weapons was also seized in the operations near Imam Ali mausoleum , the daily cited al-Shalaan. 1405/1771
