Ayatollah Sistani calls for immediate end to clashes in Iraq

London, Aug 13, IRNA -- The London office of Grand Ayatollah Ali Sistani in a statement on Thursday called on all sides engaged in the fighting in the holy city of Najaf to end clashes as soon as possible. The office statement stressed that Ayatollah Sistani is following Iraq`s developments from hospital bed "with deep pain and great concern", and that he is worried about the conditions of the Iraqi people. The office also stressed that it would continue efforts to resolve the prevailing crisis in Iraq in cooperation with the relevant institutions and the Iraqi officials as soon as possible. Ayatollah Sistani was quoted in the statement as calling on all sides of the clashes in the holy city of Najaf to adopt serious measures to end the crisis, and to set the stage for efforts to prevent such incidents in the future. Ayatollah al-Sistani flew to London last Friday for treatment for a heart problem. 2330/1432
